Hand-held circular saws with trestles and guide-rails are widely used for sheet cutting, but their popularity hides serious drawbacks.
Accurate dimensioning is time consuming. The sheet must be measured and marked in at least two places. The rail must be precisely positioned. Bowed sheets can make this difficult – clamping may be necessary.
Cutting across the middle of larger sheets can quickly become back-breaking. The trestles often need repositioning part-way through the cut. Rails are particularly slow and laborious when cutting small pieces and are of limited use with pieces too narrow to support their width. Typically they lack rigidity and are all too easy to damage.
Like hand-held circular saws, table saws need a large operating area and have exposed blades, risking injury. Being tables, they attract clutter which must be cleared before use. Additionally, horizontal sheet handling is far more difficult than vertical handling, especially with heavier sheets.
